Analytical Reflection on Oral Presentation

Saturday, December 2, 2017

My group, Eldervists, presented a proposal to implement an emergency alert system for the elderly. It was a nerve-wracking experience as it was my first official formal presentation in university.

Speaking very quickly has always been a bad habit of mine, especially when it comes to giving a presentation. Ever since my polytechnic days, I had to speak very fast due to the time limit. As a result, it became a habit that I find difficult to change. Before the actual presentation, my group members and I rehearsed a few times. I was calm and composed and spoke at an average speed. However, during Eldervists' presentation, I tensed up and started mumbling my words away. I spoke too fast and could not deliver my message properly to the audience. When I speak fast, I tend to lose my ideas and sound very monotonous as well. However, I am working on slowing down my speech.

Apart from speaking quickly, I feel that I do not have good body posture and tend to fidget too much. From the feedback received from my classmates, I realised that I stood on one foot and was not professional towards the audience. Body language is one of the factors to engage my audience and standing on one foot was definitely a no-no.

Mistakes are inevitable and it helps me to grow as a person. With the feedback received from my classmates, I hope to be able to correct my mistakes and make myself a better presenter in future presentations.

  1. I appreciate the fine detail in this post in terms of your presentation preparation and delivery experience. You zoom in on some of your OP weaknesses, addressing these in terms of what you did and how you can improve. Thanks for the great effort doing the presentations and then reflecting.
